Comox Valley

It's not often designers get their hands on original 1970's homes, but the magic that can happen when they do is invigorating. Design partner @ef was brought in by these homeowners to rework their newly purchased 1976 home with an emphasis on creating a more open and inviting layout.

Typical of 70's kitchens the original footprint was boxed in and secluded from the rest of the home. By removing two walls @ef was able to include both an island with breakfast seating (and hidden storage along the back) plus room for a 12-person dining table. The coastal palette was inspired by the natural beauty of the Comox Valley and adds another layer of harmony between the home and its surroundings.

"After relocating to the Comox Valley, and purchasing a 1976 home with original details, the homeowners approached us to help redesign the kitchen as part of a whole-home renovation. The kitchen was segmented from the rest of the main floor, and the cabinets, tiles, and wallpaper were all original to the home and very dated.

We wanted to maximize storage while keeping the kitchen light and airy with lots of counter space. By removing the walls that boxed in the original kitchen, we were able to add an island, with plenty of functional storage, while leaving enough space for a dining table to seat up to 12. The homeowners also wanted to include an element of colour, and building off of this we created a coastal-inspired palette. We used medium-toned white oak for the cabinets, a neutral white stone countertop with subtle movement, brushed brass accessories, and featured teal + turquoise tiles for the backdrop."
